Some people don’t realize that daily flossing is an important part of dental care. According to some surveys, there are a lot of people who never use dental floss. But aren’t they forgetting something? Even if you brush your teeth twice a day, don’t expect that to be enough for a proper oral hygiene. You might think that you brushed each tooth, but what about the places between your teeth? Those are the places where food gets stuck and dental plaque develops.

After about twenty-four hours dental plaque turns into tartar by a calcification process. Tartar is really persistent; it can’t be flossed or brushed. This is why daily flossing is recommended. Many gum diseases and tooth problems, like tartar build-up, cavities, periodontists, gingivitis and bad breath, are caused by inefficient oral care.

A dental floss is easy to use: just take a piece, hold it in your fingers, and scrub between each tooth to clean in thoroughly. It is also important to floss under the gum line. As the toothbrush can’t reach these places, they are good spots for bacteria to multiply. By flossing this way, you can actually prevent gum diseases. Don’t forget to use a clean section of floss for each tooth! This way the spreading of bacteria can be prevented.

A possible problem while flossing can be bleeding gums. If you didn’t floss before, or you floss infrequently, this is a normal effect and it will quickly go away. However, if this problem persists, you should visit your dentist. Be careful and gentle with your gums! Gum tissue is very sensitive and you can hurt yourself if you floss incorrectly. Remember, you’re supposed to floss your teeth, not your gums! If you’re not sure that you’re using a correct flossing technique, don’t hesitate to ask for professional help.

You can get dental floss in different lengths or thickness, waxed or unwaxed . There are some advantages and disadvantages to thicker and thinner flosses. Thin flosses may be easier to get between the teeth, but they can also easily break. Thick flosses might be harder to use, if you can’t fit them between your teeth. Maybe the best possible choice is to get a thicker one, which can be separated into thinner strips as needed.

There are many popular brands that are frequently used, like Oral B or Colgate dental floss. Choosing the right brand is really a personal preference. There are also electric power flosses, that use vibration to scrape the tooth. These are similar to electric toothbrushes. Their advantage is that the vibration is considered soothing and you don’t have to do much work.

Don’t forget that the bristles of the toothbrush don’t reach the places between your teeth. Dental flossing should be a part of your personal care and oral hygiene daily routine.
