I’ve just got into foster care, and I’ve been given a temporary placement. He’s a fine boy, age 14, but he has lived off of strictly soft drinks for years. He hasn’t brushed his teeth in years, and his gums are in very poor condition. Besides brushing his teeth is there any thing I can do to help him improve his oral hygiene? His gums bleed often, anything to stop that? etc etc.
Thanks in advance.
The right thing to do would be to take him to the dentist in order to repair any cavities that may be present. He could have chronic abscesses which may be painless so the only way to make sure he doesn’t need restrorative work would be x-rays and careful examination by a dentist. The bleeding gums that you are talking about is gingivitis and it has most likely progressed past the point that simple brushing and flossing can help. He needs a professional cleaning by the hygienist to remove any calculus that may be present. Only after all of these things are addressed can he have the optimum oral health.
How do I help this child develop a healthy mouth after years of poor oral hygiene?

Please please please take him to a dentist! they know exactly how to treat this correctly! otherwise brush until gums gain strength as of the average mouth then begin flossing becuz you do not want to floss gums of which are so sensitive to the touch!
Good Luck!!!
Hope i could help!!!
